The Rubber Band Jump

Do you have an obnoxious amount of rubber bands with nothing to do with them? Or do you have a gazillion hair ties that the cat hasn’t eaten yet? Try Adam London’s quick and easy trick to wow your friends with a simple rubber band!

Rubber Band Jump Setup

As with any magic trick, practice makes perfect! You only need a simple, stretchy rubber band and your fingers (sorry, Mister Thumb, you’re not included in this trick!). A simple hair tie would also work if you don’t have a rubber band. Make sure you find a rubber band that fits your fingers, as a band that is too big won’t be tight enough to do the Rubber Band Jump.

Hold your hand up to your audience with the palm facing you. Make sure you don’t let your friends see your palm! You’ll loop the rubber band around your index and middle finger and show your friends how stretchy it is to prove it’s not fake or broken.

With the index finger of your other hand, stretch the rubber band diagonally toward your thumb and hold it tight. Then, bend all four fingers down to your palm and rest the taut rubber band on top of your fingertips. The rubber band won’t jump unless all four fingertips are under it!

Time to Jump!

Now, you should be able to open your hand, straightening all of your fingers, to make the rubber band appear to “jump” to your ring finger and pinky! If it doesn’t jump, review the setup instructions and try again. You can also do this trick with the rubber band looped around your ring finger and pinky—it works both ways!

You did it! You WOW’d your friends with the Rubber Band Jump! If you need a visual representation of the trick, Adam London shared a video tutorial that you can watch below:

For “The Rubber Band Jump” Experts

If you’ve mastered the Rubber Band Jump, try this advanced version of the trick with TWO rubber bands! You’re pretty much doing the easy Rubber Band Jump but with one rubber band on your index and middle finger and the second rubber band on your ring finger and pinky. Use different colored rubber bands to make it more noticeable and fun! To make them jump, you’ll again straighten your fingers so they appear to “jump.” The rubber bands will look like they switched fingers, and now you’re a professional magician!
